Eudora 5 LogoA beta release of Eudora 5.0 has been posted to Eudora’s web site.

To use Eudora Pro 5.0 for Macintosh, you must have the following:

  • PowerPC processor.
  • MacOS System 8.1 or above. (Some places quote MacOS 7.6)
  • An Internet mail account which utilizes the POP3 or IMAP protocol with an Internet Service Provider or otherwise on the network.
  • Access to the mail account via a dedicated TCP/IP (Internet) network connection or via PPP dial-up networking through a modem.

Eudora 5.0 for Macintosh may be installed over any existing copy of Eudora, although it is strongly recommended you BACKUP first.

New in Eudora 5.0

Email Statistics

Graphs and statistics showing how much email you receive, read, get with attachments, how much email is sent, forward, replied, re-directed and how time you spend using Eudora. I can’t let my Boss see this at work as my personal email is handled in Eudora and work email in Microsoft Outlook. The two are no where near one another in proportion 🙁

New Settings Layout

The Settings Dialog has been regrouped and is far easier to work out what option belong together.

Workgroups

I haven’t read the manual yet, but this appears to be a simplified “Mailing List Server” to allow you share mail between a group of people and allow some to edit and modify it and others are set to read only.

Mail Importer

This option appears to import Mailboxes, Address Books and Account Information from other email clients, particularly Outlook Express. (Steve Cooper will like this one)

Mood Watch

This is an interesting new option – it scans the text of emails, both those you write/send and those you receive and obviously scans for sensitive/offensive words and phrases and rates them with “Cool Ice” (fine), and then with 1, 2 or 3 Chillies the more offensive it gets. (Hmm… I wonder how some of the jokes posted to my Jokes Mailing List would be rated – now for the shameless plug on how to subscribe – visit 🙂

Still Missing

Despite intensive searching I have not been able to find the option that enables the displaying and editing of Signatures in the Body of emails. This feature now exists in the Eudora Pro 5.0 beta for Windows. If anyone knows how to enable this in the Mac version, please let me know – The lack of this feature was the one this thing that almost sent me over to Outlook Express.

Feature Requests and Bug Reports

Qualcomm are actively seeking feedback on Eudora both in the form of features for inclusion in future releases and bug reports in current releases.

Email “eudora-suggest@qualcomm.com” for feature suggestions and use “mac-eudora-bugs@qualcomm.com” for bug reports. In both cases an automated response will be sent back to you and a real person will only respond if they require additional information.
